Parsimonious Preservation in Perpetuity - Experiences and Observations of Digital Preservation at The National Archives (UK)

Timothy John Gollins氏(英国公文書館 デジタル保存・資源発見部門 部門長)

The National Archives (UK) has been accessioning and preserving digital records for nearly 10 years and a number of trends are emerging from the operational experience of keeping digital records in perpetuity. We are seeing the beginning of a digital preservation industrial revolution, a move from bespoke cottage industry transformation and migration to sustaining digital records on an industrial scale. Approaches to digital preservation come in many shapes and sizes; there are theoretical models and much received wisdom from researchers. I will examine our experience of practical digital preservation and look at the particular issues, challenges, and advantages of being an archive of digital records. I will draw on this experience, and on our underlying philosophy of "Parsimonious Preservation" (PDF), to discuss the challenges we all face in the future and some possible approaches to addressing them.
